Blog Reflection 2

 Blog Reflection 2

Since my last blog reflection I think that my blog has come a long way. I hit 40 posts which I did not thing would happen, especially after the state of my blog a month or two ago. This month especially with the movie opening task I have really tried to get as many blog posts done as humanly possible. I am currently really happy with how my blog has come together over the last two months.

First Draft - Movie Opening

 First Draft
Below is the first draft of our movie opening. I think that are first draft is good but there are a few things that we could improve upon. For example I think that the opening credits go on for far to long but also I feel like the scenes in the house are actually too long. Overall I think we did a great job with our first draft and we will make sure that we improve it for our final piece.

My feedback from other first drafts - Connect 4

There is evidence of X in the creative use of most of the following technical skills.
Level 1- Minimal 0-23
Level 2 – Basic 24-35
Level 3 – Proficient 36-47
Level 4 – Excellent 48-60
Holding a shot steady where appropriate

The shots are very steady where they need to be.
Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate

As it is in modern times this is made quite easy.

Using a variety of shots and distances

I found that only really mid shots and close ups were really used. The opening lacked a long shot.

Using titles appropriately
(consider font, colour, length on screen, order)

The titles were all in order and the way they were done were very inventive.
Selecting mise en scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting

The mise en scene in the summer house area shed thing was really good.
Editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer

The editing was really good.

Using varied shot transitions and other effects selectively

Not many shot transitions happened throughout.

Using sound with images and editing

The whole idea of the voiceover is really good, it’s just that at some points it’s not clear what is being said.

Grading and Comments-  www/ebi
(I really liked/ The film opening would be so much better if)
Overall the opening is really good and the way that the tittles have been done are really good and creative. I just don’t feel as though the story is very clear and not many different shots were used.

My feedback from other first drafts - Commute

There is evidence of X in the creative use of most of the following technical skills.
Level 1- Minimal 0-23
Level 2 – Basic 24-35
Level 3 – Proficient 36-47
Level 4 – Excellent 48-60
Holding a shot steady where appropriate

Every shot that was supposed to be still was, I especially liked the shot of the ticket coming out of the machine.
Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate

Because the opening is clearly set in modern times it is pretty easy to make sure that there are no elements that shouldn’t be there.

Using a variety of shots and distances

There was a lot of different shots but I don’t think there was a long shot. The close ups and tracking shots were really good.

Using titles appropriately
(consider font, colour, length on screen, order)

The font on the few titles you have are very good but you need to put the rest of the titles in and make sure they are in the right order.

Selecting mise en scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting

The train station as a setting was very good and you played it off really well.
Editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer

There is a lot of black screens where there is a lot of pauses, these need to be sorted.

Using varied shot transitions and other effects selectively

The shot transitions are very good and the effects are also good.

Using sound with images and editing

The music used throughout the whole opening is perfect and creates enigma.
Grading and Comments-  www/ebi
(I really liked/ The film opening would be so much better if)
Overall I felt like the opening was really good and when all of the titles are added it will make it even better. I also think that the black screens need to be sorted as they are too long.

My feedback from other first drafts - A Dame With a Clue

There is evidence of X in the creative use of most of the following technical skills.
Level 1- Minimal 0-23
Level 2 – Basic 24-35
Level 3 – Proficient 36-47
Level 4 – Excellent 48-60
Holding a shot steady where appropriate

Every steady shot was perfect and it was in all the right places.
Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate

All the shots were perfect in sticking with the time period this film is supposed to be set in.
Using a variety of shots and distances

The over the shoulder shots of the conversation between the two characters were especially good and also when looking at the note in the dame’s hand. There was also shots at all of the different distances.
Using titles appropriately
(consider font, colour, length on screen, order)

The font is brilliant in sticking with the time period and also the transition of the red font at the start into the black and white shows that it is an old style film but made in modern times. The order of the titles also seemed to be correct.
Selecting mise en scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting

The setting was also really good in staying on track with the theme. The fact that it was black and white also showed the time period well.
Editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer

The editing was also extremely good.
Using varied shot transitions and other effects selectively

The way in which the colour of the font changes is really good but other than that there was not really anymore effects that I noticed.

Using sound with images and editing

The music went really well with what was being shown.
Grading and Comments-  www/ebi
(I really liked/ The film opening would be so much better if)

Overall I think that the film opening is extremely well done and is very clear what is going on. I think that when the voiceover is playing it is sometimes quite hard to understand but other than that it is amazing.

Sound - Movie Opening

Sound

In our movie opening we have used a variety of sound to make sure that our movie opening is as good as it possible can be. At the start of our opening we used muffled traffic and rap music to show that the characters are in some kind of car or transport. We then use really intense and fast paced music as the characters exit the van and start running towards the house. Foley was also used as we needed to add sounds of a closing window, slamming door and of someone picking a lock. We hope that all of these sounds give they effect that they are suppose to. In terms of foley we did it to make sure that the sound would be as clear as possible for the viewers.

First Draft Feedback - Movie Opening

First Draft Feedback
Overall most of our feedback was very positive but i do feel as though some was quite harsh. Overall it was very good and im really happy with the feedback.

Prelim Task- Brief Film Treatment

Brief Film Treatment
We chose the genre comedy because although we knew it would be extremely hard we wanted to challenge ourselves. We had to make sure it was funny because if nobody found it funny then it would be rather awkward. because our target audience was teens we though that we would try and emulate a popular teen movie. The title of our film is deluded. We though this would be suitable because one of the main characters is very deluded. Our first idea was deluded ladies man, but we thought it did not roll off the tongue as well as just deluded.

Big/Small Budget

Big/Small Budget
The concept of this is very easy to understand. It is basically how small budget movies are more likely to be independent and do not have a lot of start up capital to create their film compared to big budget movies. Small budget movies tend to have a maximum budget of $2,000,000 whereas a big movie budget can be more then 10 times higher but the standard amount for a big budget movie is around $150,000,000. The budget does usually have a huge impact on how much profit will be made form the film. Typically bigger budget films will do a lot better then small budget films, but small budget can definitely also be a raging success.

Shooting Schedule - Movie Opening

Shooting Schedule
As a group we have arranged which times would be best to shoot certain scenes so that we all ready and prepared to film.

24th November 2015
On this day we will hopefully be getting the majority of our shots done. We are trying to get our van scene where we all sit in the back and then jump out. Later on in the day we are going to try and film the majority of our scenes that are located in and around the house. For these scenes we will need a van, all black clothes, a gun and rucksack with a tools case inside.

25th November 2015
This was the day that we will shoot the scenes of Megan on the phone to a mysterious caller, We chose to do it on this day because we knew that it would not take that long to do, so we went at lunch time whilst we had time. We will also do a few more outside shots.

26th November 2015
This will be our last day of filming. We plan to film the characters going around the house looking for something. We will focus more on the individual aspects of each criminal that is searching around the house.

Marking Previous Film Opening of My Own

Film Openings I have found
For this post I have gone off and found three more film openings done by other students and have marked them based off of the criteria that I have been given. This will help me for when I am making my own film opening with my group.

This film opening i found is called Captive. I would rate Captive at a 58/60. I would rate it so highly because a lot of it was perfect. The title were very well done but i am most impressed with the mise en scene. The setting is perfect and it creates a lot of enigma and mystery. The only thing i would say is that it is a bit cliche but they have done it extremely well.

The next movie opening i found was called Mask. I would probably give this a 48/60. This opening is not bad but it does not really set the world alight. The whole running and someone being chased is very cliche. I thought they used a good variety of shots and the twist at the end was quite clever.

Marking Previous Film Openings

Previous Student Film Openings
To help us for when we are actually making our own film openings, we recently watched some of the previous film openings from the years before us. I am going to give a mark for what I think they deserve after I have watched each one and evaluated it. I will mark according to the criteria that I have been given.

Roses are Red

The opening 'Roses are Red' I think has its qualities but definitely has some downs. The idea of the opening titles was very good but I think the execution is quite poor. Some of the titles can't be seen properly and they were not shown in the right order. It establishes genre well and introduces the apparent main character and perhaps her boyfriend in the photos. Overall it is quite a good film opening and I would rate it around a 50 out of 60.

The Edge

I would probably give the highest mark to out of the three to The Edge and I would mark it at a 58 out of 60. I would mark it this highly for a lot of reasons. i think that the story is obvious and it leaves a lot of enigma because you want to know why this boy is being chased and what will happen afterwards. I heard that this opening is actually quite old which makes me appreciate all the effects added to this because they are really good and modern for how old they are.
